Desktop Bridge connects the Sidekick AI browser extension to Claude Desktop or ChatGPT Codex over MCP (Model Context Protocol), so they can read the page in your active Firefox tab. Page content stays on this computer. Regular ChatGPT chat is not supported.

Do these steps in order on this PC. When finished, Sidekick Settings should say the local bridge is connected.

Install the Sidekick AI extension

Install Sidekick AI from Firefox Add-ons, then open the sidebar: View → Sidebar → Sidekick AI. Leave Desktop AI bridge on in Settings.

Install Sidekick AI from the Chrome Web Store, then open the side panel. Leave Desktop AI bridge on in Settings.

Store installs keep a stable extension ID. You do not need to sideload the extension.

스토어 설치는 확장 ID가 고정됩니다. 압축 해제·사이드로드는 필요 없습니다.

Install Node.js 18 or newer

Node.js 18 이상 설치

The local bridge runs on Node.js. Install the LTS build, then reopen PowerShell.

로컬 브리지는 Node.js로 동작합니다. LTS를 설치한 뒤 PowerShell을 다시 여세요.

The ZIP contains a bridge folder with src/install-windows.js and src/mcp-server.js.

Extract the ZIP to a permanent folder

ZIP을 고정 위치에 압축 해제

Recommended: %LOCALAPPDATA%\SidekickAI\app\ — you should end up with ...\app\bridge\src\install-windows.js. Do not move this folder later; Claude and Codex point to it.

권장: %LOCALAPPDATA%\SidekickAI\app\ — 최종 경로가 ...\app\bridge\src\install-windows.js이어야 합니다. 나중에 폴더를 옮기면 Claude·Codex 연결이 깨집니다.

In PowerShell (change the ZIP path if you saved it elsewhere):

The ZIP has a top-level bridge folder. Extract into app, not into app\bridge again.

Run the setup command

The script registers the native host and merges sidekick-browser into Claude/Codex config when those apps exist. Firefox on Windows also builds a small .exe host (.NET Framework 4). If the browser locks the file, close all browsers and run the command again.

스크립트가 Native host를 등록하고, Claude/Codex가 있으면 sidekick-browser MCP 설정을 병합합니다. Windows Firefox용 .exe host도 빌드합니다(.NET Framework 4). 브라우저가 파일을 잠그면 브라우저를 모두 닫고 다시 실행하세요.

Reload the extension and confirm connection

확장 다시 로드 후 연결 확인

  1. Firefox: about:addons → Sidekick AI → Reload (or restart Firefox).
  2. Firefox: about:addons → Sidekick AI → 다시 로드 (또는 Firefox 재시작).
  3. Chrome: chrome://extensions → Sidekick AI → Reload.
  4. Chrome: chrome://extensions → Sidekick AI → 새로고침.
  5. Edge: edge://extensions → Sidekick AI → Reload.
  6. Edge: edge://extensions → Sidekick AI → 새로고침.
  7. Open a normal https:// page (not about: or chrome:).
  8. 일반 https:// 페이지를 엽니다 (about:, chrome: 아님).
  9. In Sidekick → Settings → Desktop AI bridge, status should say the local bridge is connected.
  10. Sidekick → 설정 → Desktop AI 연동에 로컬 브리지 연결됨이 표시되어야 합니다.

Connect Claude Desktop or Codex

After the local bridge is connected above, finish the desktop app side. Regular ChatGPT chat is not supported — use Codex.

위에서 로컬 브리지 연결이 끝난 뒤, 데스크톱 앱 쪽을 마무리합니다. ChatGPT 일반 채팅은 지원하지 않습니다 — Codex를 사용하세요.

Fully quit Claude Desktop — including the tray icon — then open it again so it loads the new MCP entry.

Claude Desktop을 트레이 아이콘까지 완전히 종료한 뒤 다시 실행해 새 MCP 설정을 읽게 합니다.

Fully quit the ChatGPT app, then open Codex again.

Settings → Local MCP servers: sidekick-browser should be running. Tools appear in the chat composer, not on the settings card.

설정 → Local MCP servers에서 sidekick-browser가 running이어야 합니다. 도구는 채팅 입력의 Connectors/도구에 있습니다.

In the ChatGPT app: Codex → Settings → MCP servers → sidekick-browser. Approve the tool the first time it runs.

Try it on an open page

열린 페이지에서 사용해 보기

With an https:// page open in Firefox, start a new chat and say:

Use the Sidekick browser tool to read the page that is open now and summarize it. Do not use web search.

You should get the current tab’s URL and title. Change the page and ask again — it should follow without an extra “read this” step.

현재 탭 URL과 제목이 나와야 합니다. 페이지를 바꾼 뒤 다시 물어도, 따로 “읽어줘” 없이 새 탭을 따라야 합니다.

The Windows ZIP and setup command are Windows-only. A signed macOS helper is planned with the one-click installer.

Models often pick web search instead of your live tab. Put this in a Claude Project or Codex AGENTS.md:

You are an assistant that reads the current desktop browser tab (Firefox / Chrome / Edge).
Page content is already cached by the Sidekick AI extension and the local MCP server sidekick-browser.

When the user mentions a webpage, site, browser, current page, this tab, this screen, a URL,
or asks to summarize / translate / explain “this”, do not guess, do not web-search, and do not
use the built-in browser or Chrome plugin.

Always call get_current_page on MCP server sidekick-browser first, then answer only from that result.
The user does not have to name the tool.

Use get_tabs only for a tab list. Use get_bridge_status only if the connection looks broken.

Use the node.exe and mcp-server.js paths printed by the setup command. Do not use npx.

경로는 설치 명령이 출력한 node.exe, mcp-server.js를 쓰세요. npx는 사용하지 마세요.

If something fails

안 될 때

  • Settings say disconnected: repeat steps 4–6 (setup command, reload extension, https:// page).
  • 설정이 미연결: 4–6단계(설치 명령, 확장 다시 로드, https:// 페이지)를 다시 진행하세요.
  • Chrome only fails: run setup again with --chrome-id from chrome://extensions.
  • Chrome만 실패: chrome://extensions의 ID로 --chrome-id를 넣어 설치 명령을 다시 실행하세요.
  • Edge only fails: run setup with --edge-id from edge://extensions.
  • Edge만 실패: edge://extensions ID로 --edge-id를 넣어 다시 실행하세요.
  • No tools in ChatGPT: you are in regular chat — switch to Codex.
  • ChatGPT에 도구 없음: 일반 채팅입니다. Codex로 이동하세요.
  • MCP running but model ignores the tab: add the project instructions above.
  • MCP는 running인데 탭을 안 읽음: 위 프로젝트 지시를 추가하세요.
  • Firefox and Chrome both open: the last browser that pushed context wins.
  • Firefox와 Chrome을 같이 켜 두면, 마지막으로 context를 보낸 브라우저가 이깁니다.
